Jack's Comments: One of Simons Greatest vintages!
Winemaker's Comments: The 2010 Clayfield Grampians Shiraz is blended from three individual wines each was produced at our Moyston winery. Clayfield Moyston Shiraz and Robinsonís Shiraz vineyard on the rocky north east slope of Mount Ararat have been the backbone of the Massif Shiraz in past vintages. In addition for this wine we sourced additional Shiraz from another organic vineyard located along the rolling hills between Ararat and Great Western. The vineyards have differing soil composition, plant vigour and water availability. Importantly the sites ripen at different times due to their aspect and altitudes. These are technically cool viticultural sites and each contributes its own character to the wine and results in a wine with flavour complexity and distinctive character.
Clayfield Shiraz wines are hand made with thorough attention to detail. Fermentation is done in temperature controlled stainless steel open fermenters regularly plunged gently by hand in the traditional method. Pressing the skins in our veteran and trusty hand operated basket press ensures that the tannins are firm but not too aggressive. The wines prior to blending were matured separately for 30 months in American and French oak hogsheads.

Tasting notes (December 2013)
The 2010 Clayfield Grampians Shiraz has a brilliant deep ruby red with good clarity. The aroma is tightly coiled, with dark, dense plum skin and woody spice mixing with cedar oak and an iodine note that sometimes makes its way into Grampians Shiraz.
The acid is tight and very fine in texture, tannins deceptively gentle (until you realise how much they have dried the finish). What's wonderful about this wine is how its compaction and density aren't in any way related to oak, as can so often be the case. It's the fruit that holds so tightly to this wine's secrets and which, in a few years time will finally relax into free flow.
It exhibits the typical Grampians Shiraz character. Extended maturation before release has seen the oak tannins integrate well, sealed with Stelvin capsules this wine will retain its freshness and also continue to mature over the next six or more years of bottle aging.
